KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News. Thank you for spending your evening with us.
This hour: The World Desk brings you the latest from Indonesia, where relief efforts are entering their third day following Saturday's deadly earthquake. Criminal Intent examines a Wexler County fraud case now tied to three neighboring states.
Happy Animals takes you to an unusual retirement party at a Fairmont farm sanctuary.
The animals are seventeen, nineteen, and twenty-two years old.
It's a celebration of longevity. And in Sports: a boxer from the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu has just made history at the Commonwealth Games in a way nobody saw coming.
Still ahead on The World Desk: aid convoys are staged, but thousands in Java remain without shelter tonight. That story is next.
Stay with us.
Should I open With a joke? Or inspirational Story?
For what?
The big Speech I am giving at the Rotary Club.
People like good jokes.
Okay. So. Inspirational Story it is.
Chip...
I will tell the story of when I risked my life to save a fellow citizen in need, How I never even knew who this person was before I helped, but if it were not for me, Linda would not be living the live she is today, because of my actions she is alive.
Stop.
what do you mean?
I know Linda, You gave her twenty dollars to cover her lunch, that is hardly saving her life..
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Before we begin, I'd like to note that I am sitting at a fifteen-degree forward angle tonight, which conveys active engagement with international material.
It conveys lower back pain.
Network anchors sit forward during foreign coverage, Deb. It indicates the material commands our full attention.
You've been sitting that way for six years.
We begin tonight with a security breach in the United Kingdom, where British Transport Secretary Andy Burnham exchanged messages with someone posing as President Trump's chief of staff.
The imposter requested a meeting. Burnham's office confirmed the exchange but has not said how long the conversation continued before the deception was discovered.
Downing Street has declined to comment. The breach was first reported by Politico Europe this morning.
London is obviously conducting a full review of its cybersecurity protocols following this incident.
Downing Street has not announced a review.
In eastern Europe tonight, the conflict in Ukraine's border regions continues to claim lives on both sides. Acting governor of Russia's Belgorod region says six people were killed in Ukrainian strikes over the weekend.
A fourteen-year-old child was among the dead. Four others were injured. The strikes targeted multiple locations in the region's southern district, which borders Ukraine.
Belgorod is essentially a demilitarized observation zone at this point in the conflict.
Belgorod city is forty kilometers from the border. It is not demilitarized.
I was referring to the observation protocols in the southern perimeter.
The southern district of Belgorod region is the entire southern half of the region, Chip. Not a perimeter.
To the United Kingdom again, where a double murderer has denied attacking a prison officer at one of Britain's highest-security facilities. Simon Levy is accused of stabbing an officer with a pen and attempting to strangle him at Belmarsh Prison.
Levy is currently serving two life sentences for murder. The alleged attack occurred in February. The officer required medical treatment but survived.
Belmarsh is located in the Greenwich borough, which has historically been the center of Britain's maritime justice system.
Greenwich is known for the meridian. Belmarsh opened in nineteen ninety-one.
The maritime connection is well established, Deb. The Thames runs directly past the facility.
A trial date has not been set.
And turning now to relief efforts in Indonesia, where the death toll from Saturday's earthquake has risen to fifty-three. Rescue teams report critical shortages of food, water, and temporary shelter in the hardest-hit areas of Java.
The United Nations estimates twelve thousand people are without shelter tonight, many of them in rural villages that were already difficult to reach before the quake struck.
Relief convoys are staged in Jakarta and Surabaya for deployment to the affected zones. Indonesia's disaster response agency says weather conditions are delaying some overland routes.
Java is the most densely populated island in the Indonesian archipelago, which makes relief coordination particularly complex.
Java is the most densely populated island in the world.
Well, yes. Within its region.
In the world, Chip.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A Wexler County fraud case now reaches into three neighboring states, and prosecutors say the number of alleged victims continues to grow. We'll have the latest charges when we return.
You need to go home.
I'm fine.
You are coughing all over the place.
I am fine, Just read the news and mind your own business.
Calm down... I was only trying to help.
I'm Sorry
No Problem.
Sixty seconds.
Gordo, get me a mask.
I'm not contagious.
I am doing the NEWS as if it were 2020, Masks on
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
Before we get to the blotter, I want to acknowledge that the lighting in this studio has changed since Tuesday and it is affecting the depth of field on camera two.
The lighting has not changed.
To tonight's blotter. A Florida man is facing multiple charges after police say he attempted to steal a city bus by presenting what he called a certificate of ownership that he had printed at a public library twenty minutes earlier.
The certificate listed the bus's make and model but gave its year of manufacture as eighteen ninety-seven, which is before the motor vehicle was invented.
Prosecutors allege the man became argumentative when the driver refused to vacate the vehicle, at which point he attempted to board through the rear emergency exit while the bus was in motion.
He is being held on five thousand dollars bond.
A South Carolina woman has been sentenced to eighteen months in federal prison for submitting false insurance claims totaling two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars for dental work that was never performed.
The court ordered restitution in full.
Turning now to what authorities are calling one of the stranger smuggling attempts in recent memory. A man flying into Los Angeles International Airport was detained after customs officers discovered twenty-nine live snakes concealed in his clothing.
Police said the snakes were hidden in cloth bags that had been sewn into the lining of the suspect's jacket and both pant legs.
The individual is described by prosecutors as cooperative, which is extraordinary given the circumstances.
Prosecutors allege.
A British man has been banned from every farm in the United Kingdom after what a judge called a campaign of agricultural disruption spanning fourteen months.
The man was convicted of trespassing on forty-one separate farms to, quote, reorganize livestock into what he believed were more compassionate groupings.
Deb, we should note that in several instances the livestock did appear to be grouped by size, which suggests at minimum a taxonomic awareness on the part of the person of interest.
He was convicted, Chip. He is no longer a person of interest. He is a person of record.
Still ahead, we have a story involving a retirement party, cake, and hoofstock. That is Happy Animals, and it is worth staying for. You're watching KRAK 11 News.
That's next.
I take seventeen vitamins now.
Why.
Optimal performance.
For what.
Broadcast. Stamina. Clarity.
You're reading a teleprompter.
At a very high level.
Your piss is neon. I know because the urinal in the mens room is a fucking mess.
That's how you know it's working.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back.
Deb, I've been thinking about the lighting in this segment. It reads warmer than the rest of the hour and I believe that's intentional.
It's the same lighting.
It feels warmer.
A farm sanctuary in northern Wexler County is holding what it's calling a retirement celebration this weekend for three animals who have been on the property for most of their lives.
A goat named Walter is seventeen. A sheep named Frances is nineteen. And a donkey named Douglas is twenty-two. The sanctuary says all three will live out their remaining years on site with full care.
The event is open to the public Saturday from noon to four. Donations support ongoing veterinary expenses for elderly animals.
Twenty-two years.
That is a— that's the whole span.
It is.
A Minnesota wildlife center has released four bald eagles after months of rehabilitation. All four were admitted with injuries from power line collisions and have now been cleared for flight.
The center says power line strikes are the leading cause of bald eagle injuries in the upper Midwest. Two of the four eagles were juveniles under three years old.
Staff attached tracking bands to monitor post-release movement. All four eagles were released at different sites to reduce territorial conflict.
And in Oregon, a cat that went missing during a family camping trip has been found fourteen miles from the original campsite after six weeks in the wilderness.
The cat, a seven-year-old tabby named Jasper, was identified by microchip after being trapped by a local hiker who noticed the animal was wearing a collar but appeared malnourished.
The family had posted missing notices across three counties. Jasper was returned home Tuesday and has regained two pounds under veterinary supervision.
Fourteen miles. Six weeks. Two pounds back already.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News— a Wexler County high school athlete is being recruited by colleges in four different states, and the decision comes down to one conversation she has not had yet.
Sports is next.
Why does your mug say World's Best Dad.
It was on sale.
You don't have kids.
It's aspirational.
You're fifty-two.
Plenty of time.
For what, adopting a teenager?
No I am impregnating 27 women and will a full time Dad within the year.
what the fuck did you just say?
SPORTS
Time now for the Krak 11 Scoreboard.
Deb, before we begin, I would like to establish that the closing signature I have been workshopping reads as authoritative.
We're at sports.
I understand that. I am asking if the signature reads as authoritative before I deploy it at the end of this segment.
Deploy it and we'll find out.
Butler defeated Purdue tonight seventy-three to sixty-eight in a game that was rescheduled twice before landing on Friday.
The Bulldogs led by nine at the half and held on through a late run. Butler's Myles Tate had twenty-two points and eleven rebounds.
That's a statement game. Butler needed that.
Butler needed a win.
In girls soccer, Lincoln High extends their shutout streak to five matches with a two-nothing win over Harrison tonight.
Goalkeeper Emma Vasquez recorded her fifth straight clean sheet. That is a keeper at the top of her game.
Five consecutive shutouts for the defense.
She's the last line.
She's one of eleven.
In baseball, the Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers five to three. The Sox scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead.
The White Sox have now won three of their last four games. Detroit drops to twelve and twenty-three on the season.
And at the European Athletics Championships, British sprinter Amy Hunt won four gold medals in seven days, quoting Gladiator after crossing the line in the two hundred meters.
Hunt won the one hundred meters, the two hundred meters, the four by one hundred relay, and the four by four hundred relay. That is four golds in one championship.
In seven days.
That's what I said.
You said one championship. Seven days is the part that makes it unprecedented.
Hunt told reporters, quote, are you not entertained, end quote, after winning the two hundred. That is a reference to the film Gladiator, in which Russell Crowe plays a Roman general forced into the arena.
Everyone knows Gladiator, Chip.
Not everyone has seen it.
Everyone has seen it.
Coming up at the top of the hour on the next Krak 11 News, we'll have the latest on the Wexler County budget vote postponement.
Two council members say they will not attend. The comptroller requested the delay, and no alternate date has been announced.
That's the next Krak 11 News, at the top of the hour. And that has been Sports with Chip Marlowe.
Good night.
Who approved this.
Approved what.
The photo. My photo. On the website.
It's fine.
It looks like I have a flashlight in my face.
You look the same.
The same as what? The same as the time I was chased by the police for getting drunk at the grand opening of the Wellington Zoo and letting the Howler Monkeys Convince me we were just going to the store to get some snacks.
That was an interesting evening.
Yes. and I still have to sit when I pee, So change the Headshot, This is personal.
