Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Here's what we're covering this hour. The World Desk, where Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory have killed six, including a fourteen-year-old. Criminal Intent, where a British sprinter makes history with four gold medals.
Happy Animals brings you adoptions and reunions from across Wexler County. And Sports, where we remember a pitcher whose name became the surgery that saved baseball.
The sprinter segment is called Criminal Intent.
It's a competitive event.
It's track and field.
We begin tonight with breaking developments in the Belgorod region, where acting Russian authorities say six people are dead after Ukrainian strikes earlier today. The World Desk is next.
Stay with us.
Do you believe in prayer.
What.
Prayer. Manifestation. The power of positive thinking.
What did you do.
I sent an email.
To who.
The station owner.
What did it say.
It was meant for you.
Oh god.
Ya, it was late, I was drunk, what can I say.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. This is The World Desk.
Deb, before we begin, I'd like to acknowledge that the pronunciation guide Gordo sent over is incomplete.
It has every name in tonight's copy.
It does not have phonetic spellings for the regional capitals, which I consider essential when covering Eastern Europe.
We begin tonight in Eastern Europe, where Ukrainian forces have carried out strikes deep inside Russian territory.
The acting governor of Russia's Belgorod region confirms six people were killed in the attacks, including a fourteen-year-old child. Four others were injured.
Belgorod is in the southern corridor, which has seen sustained action throughout the conflict.
Belgorod is in the western corridor. It shares a direct border with Ukraine.
That is what I said.
In Central Africa, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in that nation's history.
The outbreak is being caused by a rare species of Ebola called Bundibugyo, and health officials say it is the fastest growing outbreak on record for this region.
The Congo has dealt with multiple Ebola outbreaks over the years, particularly in the northern provinces where containment is difficult.
This outbreak is in the eastern provinces. The northern outbreak was twenty-eighteen.
I was establishing context.
President Trump announced today the United States will reduce the scale of joint military exercises with South Korea.
The President cited South Korea's decision to stay out of military operations against Iran and what he called his very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The exercises have been a cornerstone of Pacific stability since the armistice.
Nineteen fifty-three.
Correct.
The reduction in joint exercises represents a significant shift in U.S. military posture on the Korean peninsula, where roughly twenty-eight thousand American troops remain stationed.
South Korea's position during the Iran operation was complicated by its reliance on Middle Eastern energy imports, which account for most of the peninsula's oil supply.
South Korea produces no domestic oil. All of its supply is imported.
That supports my point.
It does not.
Moving on.
In Britain, police are conducting post-mortem examinations after five boys were killed when a car traveling the wrong way on a motorway collided with a second vehicle.
All five boys were under sixteen. Three women and a child in the second car are being treated for serious injuries.
Authorities have not said why the first vehicle was traveling against traffic.
They have not.
Still ahead on KRAK eleven, a Wexler County man faces multiple charges after what deputies are calling a systematic pattern of theft.
That story is part of our Criminal Intent segment, in a few minutes.
We'll be right back.
I'm just saying, you have a wonderful smile.
Marguerite, I'm reporting a carjacking.
And you do it so well, but you look so serious.
Three people were held at gunpoint.
But they're fine now, aren't they.
Deb. Help me.
She's right. You do have a wonderful smile.
I'm hanging up.
Don't hang up, we were just getting started.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip has decided the plaque should be in shot.
It has both our names on it, Deb. It took six weeks to arrive. It is a recognition of a decade of work and it should be visible to the viewing audience.
It's behind the fire extinguisher.
The man who spent seven hours in a Fairmont restaurant freezer has been formally sentenced.
Twenty-two year old Marcus Holloway received eighteen months supervised probation, two hundred hours community service, and a permanent trespass order from every property owned by the restaurant chain.
Prosecutors said Holloway entered through a damaged rear door, became disoriented, and triggered the freezer's internal lock mechanism while searching for what he later described as quote a place to think unquote.
He was found seven hours later suffering from mild hypothermia, still in possession of burglary tools including a screwdriver, a flashlight, and what the arresting officer described as quote an unreasonable amount of wire unquote.
Holloway's attorney argued the hypothermia constituted time served.
The judge disagreed.
A Pennsylvania man who drove through a school fence during a police chase has been sentenced to four years in state prison.
Daniel Evers crashed through the perimeter fence at Riverside Elementary during afternoon recess, crossed the playground at speed, and was apprehended in a storage closet adjacent to the gymnasium. No children were injured.
Evers pled guilty to evading arrest, reckless endangerment, and destruction of property.
A Florida man is facing federal charges after attempting to board a commercial flight with what TSA agents described as a quote decorative but fully functional unquote Civil War era bayonet in his carry-on luggage.
The passenger told screeners he had forgotten it was in the bag after a reenactment event the previous weekend. The bayonet was nineteen inches long and sharpened.
Prosecutors allege the suspect was aware of TSA regulations.
Hard to forget a bayonet, Deb.
Apparently not.
And still ahead on KRAK 11 News, a Colorado golden retriever found alive nine months after vanishing in Rocky Mountain National Park. Where Bella was, how she survived, and the reunion that has the entire rescue community talking.
That story is next.
Take that off.
It's called distinguished.
It's called a sweater vest.
George Will wears a sweater vest.
George Will is eighty-three years old.
Exactly. Timeless.
You look like you teach at a community college.
I could teach at a community college.
Chip, you look like you're about to explain why I got a C-minus.
Well maybe if you'd turned in your assignments on time, Deb.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Time now for Happy Animals.
Gordo pulled the music with the horn section again.
It's the same music we've used for six months.
A barn owl found injured near Highway Forty-One last month has been cleared for release after successful rehabilitation at the Wexler Wildlife Center.
The bird had a fractured wing and was severely dehydrated when a motorist spotted it in the median. Staff say the owl, now named Route, gained two ounces and passed all flight tests.
Route will be released this weekend in a field approximately three miles from where he was found. The center says barn owls have strong site fidelity and often return to familiar hunting grounds.
That is a magnificent animal.
In Ohio, a therapy cat who works at a children's hospital has received an honorary degree from the university that trained his handler.
Dr. Whiskers, a four-year-old orange tabby, has logged over eighteen hundred hours in pediatric wards at Columbus Children's Hospital since twenty twenty-two.
The university's board of trustees voted unanimously to award the cat an honorary doctorate in feline studies. Dr. Whiskers attended the ceremony and was photographed in a custom cap and gown.
That is exactly what should happen.
And here in Fairmont, the animal shelter reports that all four dogs featured in last week's segment have been adopted.
The shelter says they received over sixty applications in the forty-eight hours after the broadcast, and all four animals went home with Wexler County families by Wednesday morning.
Director Susan Parkhurst says that is the fastest adoption cycle the shelter has seen in eleven years. She credits the exposure and the fact that people in this county care about animals who need homes.
Still ahead, we'll have sports and the latest on what promises to be an interesting weekend of racing.
That's next.
Son of a bitch.
What is it now.
He's mad about all the bad reviews about the station.
Why would anyone leave a bad review.
It's because of the posts I made on TikTok.
What's Tac Tac.
It's an app for kids. But some adults get on there and make fools of themselves.
I see. So Gordo is a social media influencer now.
SPORTS
Sports.
Tommy John has died at the age of eighty-three.
He was thirty-one when he tore his ulnar collateral ligament in nineteen seventy-four. Before that surgery, that injury ended careers. After it, he pitched fourteen more seasons.
The procedure now bears his name. Over a third of active major league pitchers have had Tommy John surgery.
He won a hundred and sixty-four games after the surgery. Eighty-six before it.
Locally, Fairmont Central and Wexler North play Friday night under the lights. Both teams undefeated, first real test of the season for either program.
Kickoff is seven thirty at Wexler North.
The Patriot Games begin tomorrow in Washington. Emily Vasquez from Fairmont competing in the four hundred meter hurdles for our region.
She took second at state in June. Two teenagers from each state, track, swimming, basketball, gymnastics. Runs through next weekend.
It is the only time this country will celebrate its two hundred fiftieth anniversary, and Fairmont will be represented.
The two hundred fiftieth anniversary happens once.
Which is why I said it.
You did.
Yankees beat the Angels four to two Thursday night. Aaron Judge went two for four with his fortieth home run of the season.
Third Yankees player to reach forty home runs before September first in three separate seasons. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Aaron Judge.
Judge is batting two ninety-seven with a hundred and six RBIs. The Yankees are eighty-one and fifty-eight, lead the division by four games.
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is this weekend. Final race the track will host.
Max Verstappen won all three races at Zandvoort since it returned to Formula One in twenty twenty-one. He will not have a home race after this.
The track was absent from Formula One for thirty-six years before twenty twenty-one.
And at the Commonwealth Games, a boxer from Tuvalu won her country's first medal without winning a fight.
Tarona Taafaki advanced through the bracket on walkovers and withdrawals. Bronze medal, women's welterweight.
Tuvalu is a Pacific island nation with a population of eleven thousand.
She is the first athlete from Tuvalu to medal at any Commonwealth Games.
I would like to medal without winning a fight.
You would need to show up first.
Still ahead, the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. A Fairmont business is expanding despite what the Ledger said it would do.
And a viewer question about storm drains that has an answer we did not expect.
That is the Krak 11 Scoreboard. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. We'll see you at the top of the hour.
Gordo, did the shoulder rotation read?
You didn't move.
I moved on Judge's home run. I turned left shoulder forward, held it through the RBI count.
You sat still and read the numbers.
Gordo's right. You didn't move.
I am physically incapable of sitting through a Judge home run without reacting. It is involuntary. My body knows excellence when it sees it.
Your body sat perfectly still for four and a half minutes.
Interior rotation. Gordo, camera two from the left catches it better, I sent you a diagram.
I got a picture of a shoulder with arrows on it.
That's the diagram.
