KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Tonight — Russia confirms at least seven dead in what Moscow is calling the largest Ukrainian strike of twenty twenty-six. The World Desk is next with full details from both capitals.
Criminal Intent follows with Barcelona's sixty-five million pound deal for the Spain captain, and three arrests after a cricket pitch invasion in Leicester.
Happy Animals brings you the story of a therapy dog who's worked with trauma patients for six years without missing a single shift.
That dog has better attendance than you do.
And Sports covers the passing of Tommy John, the pitcher whose name became surgery, at eighty-three. That's the hour ahead on KRAK 11 News.
The World Desk is up next with the largest cross-border attack in fourteen months and what Moscow says it will do about it. Stay with us.
That's my spot.
It's not assigned.
I've parked there for nine years.
Nine years doesn't make it yours.
Well... It's Mine
Just Park next to to your spot it is always available.
Not the Point.
Of what.
that spot has shade and sometimes I take naps in my car mid day, It is the best sleep I have ever had, It is the only place I ever dream. I dream of becoming the Number One anchor in the World, Thats My Spot.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Deb, before we begin. The map. Did Gordo get my note about the map?
What map.
Behind the desk. A reference system. So viewers can establish spatial awareness during World Desk coverage.
We have graphics.
Graphics appear and disappear. A map is permanent. It conveys authority.
We begin tonight with overnight strikes on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Ukraine launched what Moscow is calling the largest attack of the year on Russian territory. At least seven people are confirmed dead.
Russia also launched strikes against Ukraine overnight, sparking fires across the capital. Six people were injured in an attack on a market in Kyiv selling second-hand records, posters and tools.
This is part of an escalating pattern in the eastern European theater, where both sides have increased operations as winter approaches and conditions deteriorate.
It's spring.
In the northern hemisphere, yes.
Ukraine is in the northern hemisphere.
Moving now to Indonesia, where the death toll from Friday's earthquake has climbed to at least fifty-three.
Thousands have been displaced. Hundreds of homes and public buildings are severely damaged, and rescue operations are ongoing in areas that were cut off by landslides.
Indonesia remains one of the world's most seismically unstable zones because of its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Most of Indonesia sits on the boundary between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates.
Right. The Pacific Ring of Fire.
That's a different tectonic system entirely.
It's all volcanic activity, Deb.
In Greece, updated numbers on the twin wildfires that broke out on the island of Salamina. Two people are now confirmed dead.
Hundreds have been evacuated. Nearly two hundred firefighters are working to keep the two separate fire fronts from merging, which would make containment significantly harder.
Greek media are reporting both fires are now considered out of control.
Salamina is in the Saronic Gulf, about ten miles west of Athens, which means prevailing winds could carry smoke and ash directly into the capital region.
Salamina is ten miles southwest of Athens.
I said west.
You said west, yes.
In sports, Britain's Amy Hunt has won a record fourth gold medal at the European Athletics Championships after Team GB took the Mixed four-by-one-hundred-meter relay.
Hunt is the first British athlete to win four golds in a single European Championship.
Four golds in one championship. Network people notice that.
She competed in the Olympics.
I meant a wider audience.
The Olympics is the widest audience.
Coming up, a Fairmont man is under arrest for an attempted break-in that went very wrong very fast. That story and more on CRIMINAL INTENT, in just a few minutes.
Stay with us.
It's a full moon Thursday.
And.
And people get strange. Emergency rooms fill up. Naked plumbers run the streets.
That's not real.
My mother was a nurse. And my father was... well, I never knew my father. But that's beside the point.
Where are you going with all this.
Full moon.
Okay...
My dad was a real asshole.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
Tonight we turn to the blotter, and Deb, I have to say, this one may be the strangest transfer we have covered all year.
It's not a transfer.
Barcelona Football Club has been charged with illegal acquisition of a Manchester City player valued at sixty-five million pounds, according to Spanish authorities. The player, Rodri, is Spain's national team captain.
Prosecutors allege the club failed to secure proper work permits and violated international transfer regulations in completing the deal.
This is a person of interest who was at the top of his game, playing for one of the most prestigious clubs in England, now at the center of what investigators are calling a complex fraud scheme.
Barcelona is charged. Rodri has not been charged with anything.
Correct. The club allegedly structured the sixty-five million pound payment through offshore accounts to avoid taxation and league financial fair play requirements.
Police said the investigation began after Manchester City filed a formal complaint with UEFA in March. Trial is set for October.
In Wexler County, a man has been arrested for the fifth time this calendar year. Timothy Grohl, twenty-nine, was taken into custody Tuesday on suspicion of shoplifting from a Fairmont hardware store.
Store employees told police Grohl allegedly concealed six packages of light bulbs in his jacket. He was apprehended in the parking lot.
Prosecutors allege this is his third shoplifting charge since January. He is being held on five thousand dollars bail.
And in national news, federal investigators have charged three men with smuggling rare tropical birds into the United States by hiding them inside musical instrument cases.
Customs agents at Los Angeles International allegedly discovered fourteen endangered parrots inside two cello cases and one trombone case during a routine inspection Sunday.
The suspects told agents they were traveling musicians. None of them could play an instrument.
That is tradecraft at its absolute worst. You are crossing an international border with livestock in a wind instrument and you have not prepared a cover story that involves actually knowing how to play it.
The parrots are valued at eighteen thousand dollars each. All three men face up to twenty years in federal prison if convicted.
Still ahead tonight, we have a story involving a dog, a bicycle, and what may be the best news you will hear all week.
Happy Animals is next.
You're watching KRAK 11 News.
What is that smell.
It's called Executive.
It's called what.
Executive. It's what they wear in boardrooms.
It smells like a hookers hotel.
Exactly.
Chip, you smell like a divorced dad at a Marriott.
Or a Married Dad on a business trip to Vegas.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, is the scoreboard visible behind my left shoulder? The prop scoreboard. I need to know if it's in frame before we get to sports.
We're doing animals.
I'm aware. I'm establishing spatial awareness for the segment that follows.
A Fairmont elementary school has a new therapy animal, and administrators say it's already making a difference.
Lincoln Elementary has introduced Shelly, a twelve-year-old Russian tortoise, to help students manage anxiety and classroom stress.
Principal Diane Kemper says Shelly moves at a pace that encourages students to slow down and be present, which is exactly what they need.
Students sit with Shelly during reading time. The tortoise does not require much, just lettuce and patience, and apparently both are in good supply.
One second grader told staff that Shelly is the only one who listens without interrupting.
That is— that's exactly right.
In Oregon, a wildlife rescue has successfully released three bald eagles after months of rehabilitation following separate injuries.
The birds were treated for wing fractures, lead poisoning, and malnutrition. All three were strong enough to fly unassisted when released Tuesday morning.
The Cascade Raptor Center says the eagles were banded before release and will be monitored through spring migration. They expect all three to thrive.
A dog in Montana walked forty-three miles to return to her previous owner after being rehomed, and both families have now agreed she knows where she belongs.
Cleo, a four-year-old cattle dog mix, was adopted by a family in Missoula but left their yard three days later. She was found two weeks after that on her original owner's porch in Kalispell.
The new family told reporters they're not offended. They said some bonds can't be reasoned with, and Cleo made her choice clear.
And finally, a parrot in Scotland has learned to answer the doorbell by saying 'nobody's home,' which has caused some confusion for delivery drivers.
The bird's owner says the parrot picked it up from her teenage son, who does not like answering the door, and now shouts it every time the bell rings.
She has posted a sign asking delivery drivers to ignore the parrot.
Still ahead, the Wexler County coach says his team is reloading, not rebuilding. We'll explain why one of those words means something different than he thinks it does.
That's next.
I take seventeen vitamins now.
Why.
Optimal performance.
For what.
Broadcast. Stamina. Clarity.
You're reading a teleprompter.
At a very high level.
Your piss is neon. I know because the urinal in the mens room is a fucking mess.
That's how you know it's working.
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
Gordo, is the scoreboard visible.
There is no scoreboard.
There is a prop scoreboard behind my left shoulder that I specifically requested for sports coverage. It establishes context.
It establishes that you brought a prop from home.
Baseball lost one of its pioneers this weekend. Tommy John, the pitcher who gave his name to a surgery that has saved hundreds of careers, has died at age eighty-three.
John tore his ulnar collateral ligament in nineteen seventy-four at age thirty-one. Before that surgery, the injury ended careers.
And he pitched fourteen more seasons after the procedure. Won two hundred eighty-eight games total. That is a Hall of Fame career built on a ligament somebody else figured out how to fix.
More than a third of major league pitchers active today have had the surgery.
The procedure is now so routine that pitchers schedule it between seasons. In nineteen seventy-four it was experimental. John was thirty-one years old and facing the end of his career.
Marcus Webb, the Fairmont man we reported on earlier, allegedly told hospital security he needed surgical equipment for his pitching career.
Webb does not play professional baseball.
Or any baseball.
High school football. Wexler County opens Friday night at home against Ridgeline. Coach Terry Voss says his team is reloading, not rebuilding, after losing eighteen seniors including quarterback Kyle Renfro.
Renfro transferred to Fairmont Central in June.
So Wexler's starting a sophomore at quarterback who has never played a varsity game, they lost their entire offensive line, and Coach Voss believes that qualifies as reloading.
Words have actual meanings.
They do, and he is using the wrong ones. Reloading means you insert new pieces into an existing framework. Wexler County lost the framework.
Fairmont Central beat Wexler East twenty-eight to fourteen Saturday in a scrimmage. Central returns nine starters on defense.
Wexler East has not beaten Fairmont Central since two thousand fourteen. That's twelve years. At some point it stops being a rivalry and becomes a scheduling tradition.
Soccer. Barcelona has been charged with illegal acquisition in a sixty-five million pound deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri. The charges relate to financial regulations, not the player himself.
Rodri has not been charged with anything.
That is what I just said.
I was clarifying for viewers who might have thought otherwise.
By repeating the thing I said.
Repetition aids comprehension, Deb. That's broadcast fundamentals.
The Cleveland Browns begin their regular season Thursday night in Cleveland against the Dallas Cowboys. Quarterback Deshaun Watson returns for his fourth season with the team after three difficult years.
Watson threw for thirty-two hundred yards last season with nineteen touchdowns and twelve interceptions. Those are not numbers that inspire confidence in year four of a two hundred thirty million dollar contract.
The contract is fully guaranteed.
Which means Cleveland is paying him regardless of performance. So Watson is reloading.
Watson is rebuilding.
Watson has the same offensive coordinator, the same receiving corps, and the same two hundred thirty million dollar paycheck. That is the definition of reloading.
Watson has the same problems he had last year.
Coming up on the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour: the Wexler County Sheriff's Office says a suspicious package near the courthouse has been cleared, we'll have the latest on that investigation.
Plus: Fairmont's planning commission meets Tuesday to vote on the rezoning proposal for the old Vance property on Highway Twelve.
That's the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour.
Thank you for watching.
You need to go home.
I'm fine.
You are coughing all over the place.
I am fine, Just read the news and mind your own business.
Calm down... I was only trying to help.
I'm Sorry
No Problem.
Sixty seconds.
Gordo, get me a mask.
I'm not contagious.
I am doing the NEWS as if it were 2020, Masks on
