KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News, live from Fairmont.
A comprehensive hour ahead. On the World Desk: Russia reports casualties following the largest Ukrainian cross-border strike of twenty twenty-six. Criminal Intent: authorities in Manchester arrest a wanted man while he slept on a roof.
Happy Animals: a Tuvalu boxer makes history at the Commonwealth Games without throwing a punch. And Sports: breaking down what went wrong in Seattle. That lineup, next sixty minutes, right here.
The boxer won bronze. She threw several punches.
Coming up first on the World Desk: Moscow confirms at least seven dead after Ukraine launches what Russian officials are calling the largest attack on its territory since the start of this year. Casualty figures and response from both capitals when we return.
Stay with us.
You need to go home.
I'm fine.
You are coughing all over the place.
I am fine, Just read the news and mind your own business.
Calm down... I was only trying to help.
I'm Sorry
No Problem.
Sixty seconds.
Gordo, get me a mask.
I'm not contagious.
I am doing the NEWS as if it were 2020, Masks on
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have significant developments out of Greece tonight where firefighters are making progress against the twin blazes on Salamina.
Salamina. The site of one of history's great naval engagements.
The strait of Salamis was the site of the battle. The island is what's on fire.
Nearly two hundred firefighters are now working to keep the two separate fire fronts from merging, which would create what emergency officials are calling a catastrophic scenario.
Two people are confirmed dead. Evacuation orders remain in place for hundreds of residents across the eastern half of the island, which sits just off the coast from Piraeus.
Piraeus, Athens' gateway to the Aegean since the fifth century B.C.
Piraeus is a city with a population of one hundred sixty thousand. The harbour was built much later.
Greek authorities say favorable wind conditions overnight allowed crews to establish containment lines along the northern perimeter, though both fires remain active.
In Ukraine, at least six people were injured in overnight Russian strikes that hit a market in Kyiv selling second-hand records, posters, toys and tools.
The attack comes as Moscow reports at least seven killed in what Russian officials are calling the largest Ukrainian cross-border strike of twenty twenty-six.
Both capitals were hit within hours of each other. Fires were still burning across multiple districts in Kyiv as of six p.m. Eastern time.
In Indonesia, the death toll from Friday's earthquake has now reached fifty-three as rescue teams continue reaching villages that were cut off by landslides triggered by the initial quake.
Hundreds of homes and public buildings have been severely damaged across western Java. Thousands remain displaced, many sheltering in tents and temporary structures.
The entire region sits on the Ring of Fire, which makes events like this unfortunately common.
Indonesia sits on part of the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is a forty-thousand-kilometre arc that runs along the entire Pacific basin.
Indonesian officials say the magnitude six point four quake struck at a depth of ten kilometres, which is considered shallow and therefore more destructive to surface structures.
Emergency crews are using heavy equipment to clear roads blocked by debris. The government has deployed mobile medical units to affected areas.
And in what I think is a fascinating piece of international sports news, Belgium's Sebastien Pocognoli has been confirmed as Scotland's new national team head coach.
The Scottish Football Association is calling Pocognoli one of Europe's brightest emerging coaching talents. He's signed a two-year deal.
Pocognoli spent his playing career primarily in Belgium and England, so there's familiarity with the British game, which I think is going to serve him well in terms of understanding what Scottish football needs.
Scottish football is not English football.
They're both British.
They are two separate countries with separate leagues, separate governing bodies, and separate national teams, which is why Scotland is hiring a coach.
The appointment takes effect immediately. Scotland's next match is a qualifier in March.
Deb?
You just said Deb.
I was handing off to you.
You handed off to me by saying my name.
That is standard anchor procedure.
Still ahead on KRAK Eleven News, Criminal Intent. A decorative gourd operation that somehow got seventy-two pounds across an international border, and the man who allegedly posted seventeen photos of stolen property with the serial numbers visible.
That is a lot of gourds.
Fourteen gourds.
Packed efficiently.
I'm just saying, you have a wonderful smile.
Marguerite, I'm reporting a carjacking.
And you do it so well, but you look so serious.
Three people were held at gunpoint.
But they're fine now, aren't they.
Deb. Help me.
She's right. You do have a wonderful smile.
I'm hanging up.
Don't hang up, we were just getting started.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip has decided the Blotter needs what he is calling a crime map.
A visual reference system. Viewers watching cold should be able to see at a glance where criminal activity is concentrated, which establishes both geographic awareness and investigative depth.
We begin tonight in Manchester, England, where a wanted man was arrested while sleeping on a roof.
Greater Manchester Police located the suspect early Wednesday morning on the roof of a residential building. Officers climbed to the location and made the arrest. The suspect did not wake during the initial approach.
Two officers sustained minor injuries during the operation, police said. Neither required hospitalization.
Authorities have not disclosed how the suspect accessed the roof or how long he had been there. He now faces charges related to the original warrant.
Closer to home: a Wexler County man has been charged with forgery after prosecutors say he attempted to cash a check written in crayon.
Bank staff became suspicious when the check, allegedly made out for four thousand dollars, was submitted with visible wax residue and the words 'pay to the order of' spelled incorrectly.
The check was written on an account that had been closed for six years, prosecutors allege.
The suspect told officers he had been practicing his signature.
In Fairmont: a landscaping truck reported stolen last month has been recovered after the alleged thief sent the owner an invoice for yard work completed with the stolen vehicle.
Police say the invoice, sent via email, included photographs of the completed job, the truck's license plate visible in two of them, and a request for payment within fourteen business days.
The truck was recovered Tuesday. The suspect has been charged with grand theft auto and is being held on twenty-thousand-dollar bond.
The owner has not yet paid the invoice.
And in Vermont: a man has pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed petting zoo from his apartment.
Animal control was called after neighbors reported the smell and the presence of what one described as 'several sheep, possibly goats, hard to tell from the hallway.'
Officers found four goats, nine chickens, two ducks, and a rabbit living in a two-bedroom unit. The man had been charging neighborhood children five dollars per visit.
All animals have been relocated to a licensed sanctuary. The man was fined twelve hundred dollars and banned from keeping livestock in residential zones.
Deb, before the break. If we were to rank tonight's Blotter by severity of outcome—
We're at time.
Still ahead tonight: Happy Animals. A penguin, a golden retriever, and twelve horses that found a second career.
Stay with us.
Why does your mug say World's Best Dad.
It was on sale.
You don't have kids.
It's aspirational.
You're fifty-two.
Plenty of time.
For what, adopting a teenager?
No I am impregnating 27 women and will a full time Dad within the year.
what the fuck did you just say?
HAPPY ANIMALS
And now the Good News Desk.
Before we start, I would like to note that camera two has been adjusted. It is noticeably lower than it was during Criminal Intent and I believe we should address that before the segment.
Camera two has not been adjusted.
It is visibly lower. I can see the difference from here.
A penguin in San Diego is raising money for seabird conservation by painting.
Raphael is an African penguin at SeaWorld San Diego who has been trained to hold a brush in his beak and apply paint to canvas. His first piece sold at auction for fourteen hundred dollars.
All proceeds support coastal habitat restoration. Staff say Raphael prefers blue and reaches for the blue paint every time they offer him a choice.
That is extraordinary work being done by a bird who has no idea how good he is at it.
A golden retriever in Montana has become the state's first archaeological detection dog.
Ranger was trained to detect organic material associated with historical sites. He has already located three Blackfeet campsites near Glacier National Park that were previously undocumented.
Dogs are now finding the past. We have reached the point where animals are better historians than most of the people writing the textbooks.
A Kentucky sanctuary has retrained twelve former Charleston carriage horses for therapeutic riding programs.
The oldest is nineteen. Three are already working with children. The sanctuary says carriage horses adapt well because they are accustomed to close contact with people.
Horses who spent years pulling tourists are now helping kids learn to trust something larger than themselves. That is exactly the kind of work that should be happening everywhere.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, a Wexler County coach says his team is not rebuilding, they are reloading, and we will tell you why he is wrong about what those words mean.
Son of a bitch.
What is it now.
He's mad about all the bad reviews about the station.
Why would anyone leave a bad review.
It's because of the posts I made on TikTok.
What's Tac Tac.
It's an app for kids. But some adults get on there and make fools of themselves.
I see. So Gordo is a social media influencer now.
SPORTS
Sports.
Gordo, is camera two lower than it was at the top of the hour.
Camera two has not moved since two thousand eleven.
It has dropped during the last four minutes of coverage.
The angle has not changed during any coverage.
Fairmont Central beat Wexler East twenty-eight to fourteen Friday night in the county football opener. Central has now won ten straight in this series.
The last time Wexler East won this game was two thousand twelve.
Which puts us in a rebuilding conversation.
It puts us in a different conversation.
The Browns open their preseason schedule Thursday night against Green Bay in Canton. Cleveland finished four and thirteen last season and enters camp with a new offensive coordinator and the same quarterback.
Who threw nine interceptions in the first four games.
Personnel decisions are above my pay grade, Deb.
They're above his completion percentage.
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed this season will be his final year as a professional player. Ronaldo is thirty-nine, plays in Saudi Arabia, and has scored forty-three goals in thirty-eight matches this season.
He said the same thing two years ago.
And last year.
He's averaging one retirement announcement per season.
The Pacific boxer who won Tuvalu's first-ever Commonwealth Games medal has now advanced to the final after her semifinal opponent also withdrew. Tarona Taafaki will compete for gold Friday.
Without winning a competitive bout.
Correct.
That's what the wire said.
I can read the scoreboard from camera two if the angle were correct.
There is no scoreboard.
There is a prop scoreboard behind my left shoulder that has been in place since the sports desk was integrated into the main set in two thousand fourteen.
That is a decorative panel.
It says scoreboard.
It says scoreboard on a decorative panel.
Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News, Howard Vance has issued new programming directives to all staff. We'll have details on what that means for this newsroom and this desk.
It means we follow the directives.
Pending clarification.
It's in the memo.
For Deb Sarkissian, I'm Chip Marlowe. KRAK 11 News continues at the top of the hour.
Don't look at me.
What happened to your arm.
This idiot spilled coffee all over me.
That idiot is the new CEO. Hope you were nice.
Hmm.
CEO will be out to greet in thirty seconds.
It was good working with you, Deb.
Chip?
Yeah. I called the new CEO a T-rex-armed douchebag. So probably not going to be one of my best days.
