KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Tonight: Moscow reports at least seven dead in what it calls the largest Ukrainian cross-border attack of twenty twenty-six. Russia also launched deadly overnight strikes against Kyiv. We'll have that story and the latest from the region on The World Desk in just a few minutes.
Belgium names a new coach for Scotland's national team. Criminal Intent examines what that means for a program that hasn't qualified for a major tournament in eight years.
Happy Animals features a penguin.
And tropical storm Lala continues to punish Hawaii's Big Island with hurricane-force winds even after being downgraded. Sports has the latest on conditions and what it means for residents still under evacuation orders.
Still ahead on The World Desk: new details on civilian casualties in the Ukrainian capital, and what Moscow is saying about the cross-border strike it claims killed seven. That's next.
That's the alarm.
I'm aware.
We should go.
Cronkite didn't go.
It's a real alarm.
They're all real, Gordo. That's what makes them alarms.
I can smell it.
So can I, and I'm still here. I will report the news. You sallies head on out of here.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip, did you move the globe.
I rotated it to show the Pacific. The Pacific is where most of tonight's coverage originates, and I thought the visual cohesion would communicate preparedness.
The globe is decorative. It's been facing the Atlantic since two thousand eleven.
Then it was wrong for thirteen years.
We begin tonight with an arrest following a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people injured over the weekend.
A nineteen-year-old suspect was taken into custody Sunday at the university, found hiding in a closet on campus after five students were shot during an on-campus gathering Saturday night. The suspect was not a student at Virginia State.
All five victims were treated at area hospitals and released. Virginia State Police say charges are pending. The university is located in Petersburg, about twenty-three miles south of Richmond.
Petersburg is practically a suburb of Richmond at this point. Richmond being the capital of Virginia and one of the original colonial settlements, very close to where the first representative government in the Americas convened.
The first representative assembly met in Jamestown. Jamestown is fifty miles from Richmond.
Same region.
Different city.
Rescue operations continue in western Java tonight following Friday's earthquake. Indonesian authorities now confirm at least fifty-three dead, with that number expected to rise as teams reach villages cut off by landslides and damaged roads.
Hundreds of homes across the Cianjur region have been destroyed or severely damaged. International aid teams arrived Sunday and are working alongside Indonesian search and rescue crews in what officials describe as extremely difficult terrain.
The earthquake struck Friday afternoon local time. Many of the buildings that collapsed were older structures not built to withstand seismic activity, which is constant in that part of the world because the entire Indonesian chain sits directly on the Ring of Fire.
The Ring of Fire is a forty-thousand-kilometre arc that runs along the entire Pacific basin. Indonesia is on the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is not Indonesia.
I was establishing geological context.
You were establishing Indonesia as four continents.
In Greece, firefighters are still working to contain twin blazes on the island of Salamina that have now claimed two lives. Evacuation orders remain in effect for hundreds of residents as crews work to prevent the two fires from merging into a single front.
Nearly two hundred firefighters are on the ground. Greek media report both fires started within an hour of each other Sunday morning. Cause is still under investigation.
Salamina is just off the coast near Athens, very close to the mainland. You can see smoke from the port at Piraeus, which is Athens' primary commercial harbour and has been since antiquity.
Salamina is in the Saronic Gulf, less than two kilometres from the mainland at its closest point. The island is historically significant as the site of a major naval battle in four eighty B.C.
That's the battle I was referencing when I said antiquity.
You said the harbour has been there since antiquity. The harbour was built in the fifth century. The battle was fought in the strait.
Same general timeframe.
And finally tonight from The World Desk, an emergency alert sent to millions of phones across the United Kingdom Friday night is now raising concerns from domestic abuse advocates who say the unannounced test may have put vulnerable people at risk.
The alert was part of a nationwide test of the UK's emergency broadcast system. Campaigners say people in abusive situations often keep hidden phones for safety, and the loud alarm may have exposed those devices to their abusers.
The UK government has not commented on whether advance warnings were issued to domestic abuse organisations. Similar alert systems in other countries typically include opt-out provisions.
The UK is dealing with this because they adopted the American emergency alert model, which we pioneered in the nineties. So in a sense, this is technology we developed being used overseas.
The emergency alert system was developed in nineteen fifty-one. The UK's system is based on a European Union standard adopted in twenty sixteen. It is not the American model.
But we had it first.
We did have it first.
Still ahead tonight, CRIMINAL INTENT. A Wexler County man is facing felony charges after posting photos of what prosecutors say is stolen property to his own social media account. Seventeen separate photos.
With the caption 'new mower day.'
That story in a few minutes. We'll be right back.
That's my spot.
It's not assigned.
I've parked there for nine years.
Nine years doesn't make it yours.
Well... It's Mine
Just Park next to to your spot it is always available.
Not the Point.
Of what.
that spot has shade and sometimes I take naps in my car mid day, It is the best sleep I have ever had, It is the only place I ever dream. I dream of becoming the Number One anchor in the World, Thats My Spot.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. A Michigan woman is facing federal charges tonight after border agents say seventy-two pounds of cannabis was discovered inside decorative gourds.
The gourds rattled.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the thirty-four-year-old attempted to cross from Windsor, Ontario into Detroit Sunday afternoon with fourteen gourds in her vehicle.
Officers became suspicious when asked about the contents of the decorative fall arrangement and heard what one agent described as, quote, significant rattling inconsistent with dried plant material.
Prosecutors allege each gourd had been hollowed out, filled with vacuum-sealed packages, and resealed with craft adhesive.
The suspect told agents the gourds were for a seasonal display. She has been charged with intent to distribute a controlled substance and is being held pending a detention hearing.
An eleven-thousand-pound ceremonial trophy was stolen from the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow over the weekend.
The sterling silver trophy, awarded annually since nineteen forty-seven, was taken from a secure display area Saturday night. Investigators are reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses to establish movement patterns.
Police said the theft occurred during a ninety-minute window when the venue was open to the public.
Marcus Fennelly of Wexler County appeared in court this morning on charges of receiving stolen property after prosecutors say he posted seventeen photographs of an allegedly stolen riding mower to social media.
The caption read, quote, new mower day. The mower had been reported stolen from a Fairmont address four days earlier. Police said the serial number was visible in six of the photos.
Fennelly was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court September fourth.
The prosecution has declined to comment on whether additional charges are being considered.
And that is the Blotter Brief.
It was three stories.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, an Oregon bald eagle returns to the wild after months of rehabilitation, and we will tell you why this particular release had our newsroom genuinely moved.
That is next.
I need to be camera left.
You are camera left.
I need to be more camera left.
That's a wall.
Then we move the wall.
We're not moving a wall.
Peter Jennings moved a wall.
Peter Jennings did not move a wall. And Peter Jennings was not trying to hide a black eye.
So... camera left?
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
Deb, is camera two lower than it was in the last segment.
Camera two is exactly where it has always been.
A penguin at the San Diego Zoo has learned to paint, and the paintings are being auctioned to fund seabird conservation.
The penguin's name is Raphael. He is an African penguin. Staff noticed he was interested in the brushes during habitat enrichment.
The first auction raised fourteen hundred dollars. The zoo says Raphael prefers blue.
That is extraordinary work.
In Montana, a golden retriever named Ranger has been certified as the state's first archaeological detection dog.
Ranger was trained to detect bone and ceramic fragments at historic sites without disturbing the surrounding soil.
He has already located three previously unknown Blackfeet campsites near Glacier National Park. Ranger is four years old.
And this is his life's work.
In Kentucky, a horse sanctuary has taken in twelve retired carriage horses from Charleston and is retraining them for therapeutic riding programs.
The oldest is nineteen. The sanctuary says all twelve have adapted well and three are already working with children.
The program serves children with developmental disabilities. The sanctuary is accepting donations to expand the stables.
That is exactly the kind of thing that should be happening everywhere.
Still ahead tonight, the Mariners are four games back with nineteen to play, and it is not getting easier. Sports is next.
What is that smell.
It's called Executive.
It's called what.
Executive. It's what they wear in boardrooms.
It smells like a hookers hotel.
Exactly.
Chip, you smell like a divorced dad at a Marriott.
Or a Married Dad on a business trip to Vegas.
SPORTS
Good evening, I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is the Krak 11 Scoreboard.
Gordo, is camera two lower now than it was when we opened the hour.
Camera two has not moved since two thousand eleven.
Fairmont Central hosts Wexler East Friday night in the county football opener. Central has won nine straight in this series. The last time Wexler East beat Central, the current roster had not been born.
Nineteen ninety-seven.
Which makes it a streak, not a rivalry.
It makes it a fact.
The Browns open their preseason Thursday against Green Bay. Cleveland went four and thirteen last season and enters training camp with a new offensive coordinator and the same quarterback who threw nine interceptions in the final four games.
That is the exact same quarterback.
The hope is that the scheme changes.
The hope is not a scheme.
Fairmont Hardware won the rec league championship Saturday night, beating Dale's Tire and Auto four to three in extra innings. It is Hardware's first title in eleven years. The manager is seventy-two years old and said after the game that he would absolutely do this again next year.
He has said that every year since two thousand fourteen.
And he has been correct every year since two thousand fourteen.
The Mariners lost to Oakland six to three Sunday. Seattle is now four games back in the wild card with nineteen to play. They have lost seven of their last ten and have scored more than three runs exactly once in that stretch.
So they are due.
That is not how batting averages work.
Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed this season will probably be his last as a player. He said the same thing two years ago, and last year, and he has now scored forty-three goals in thirty-eight matches this season in Saudi Arabia, so the word probably is doing some work there.
He is forty-one years old.
And averaging more than a goal per game.
Against defenses that are also forty-one years old.
Belgium has confirmed Sebastien Pocognoli as Scotland's new national team head coach. Pocognoli played for West Brom and Brighton, spent most of his career as a left back, and is now responsible for getting Scotland to qualify for something.
Scotland has not qualified for a World Cup since nineteen ninety-eight.
So they are also due.
That is still not how this works.
Gordo, has camera two dropped at all in the last four minutes.
Chip.
I am simply establishing whether the angle has changed during sports coverage specifically.
The angle has not changed during any coverage.
Coming up on the next Krak 11 News at the top of the hour: a Wexler County man has been arrested for the fourth time this year, this time involving a riding mower and seventeen separate photographs he posted himself.
We'll have that story, the overnight forecast, and whether the tropics are finally done with Hawaii.
That's next.
What happened to your neck.
Nothing happened to my neck.
Something happened to his neck.
Fuck off.
Wow. Chill.
Sorry. My neck hurts.
What happened to your neck.
Nothing happened to my neck.
