KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
We have a full hour of coverage ahead. THE WORLD DESK is coming up with breaking developments from Indonesia, where a deadly earthquake has left thousands without shelter and rescue crews searching for survivors.
Then CRIMINAL INTENT examines a case making its way through the courts right here in Wexler County. HAPPY ANIMALS brings you a reunion seven years in the making. And SPORTS has the very latest on a hurricane that is not done with Hawaii yet.
That's a storm.
It's a full hour of coverage, Deb. That's what we do. THE WORLD DESK is up first, and we begin tonight in Indonesia, where the death toll from this morning's earthquake has now been confirmed at fifty-three. We'll have those details in just a moment.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Before we begin tonight, I would like it noted that I have correctly pronounced fourteen city names this week without correction.
Twelve.
We're not counting the ones where you agreed with me.
We start tonight with a developing story from England, where police have opened a murder inquiry after a man bitten by a dog has died.
The victim was attacked in Wakefield. Police are asking two people who stopped to help him to come forward as witnesses. Authorities have not released the victim's name or details about the dog involved.
Wakefield is in the industrial north, near Manchester. A lot of textile history in that region.
Wakefield is in West Yorkshire, near Leeds.
Leeds area. Fifteen.
A new update tonight on rescue efforts in Indonesia. The death toll from the earthquake has now reached fifty-three, with thousands still displaced.
Rescue teams continue to search through damaged buildings. Hundreds of homes and public structures were severely damaged when the quake struck the island of Java. Emergency shelters have been set up across the affected areas.
Java sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is why the region experiences so many seismic events. The volcanic soil makes it very fertile, which is why so many people live there despite the risk.
Java sits inside the Ring of Fire. The eastern edge runs through the ocean east of the island.
Inside the ring. International aid organizations are assisting with relief efforts. We'll continue to follow this story as the situation develops.
In Ukraine, additional strikes overnight. Russia launched attacks across Kyiv, sparking fires in several districts. Moscow reports at least seven killed in Russian territory in what it calls the largest Ukrainian attack of twenty twenty-six.
One strike in Kyiv hit a secondhand market. Six people were injured. Emergency crews are still searching debris this morning. The market sold second-hand records, posters, toys, and tools.
Kyiv is the cultural and administrative center of Ukraine, situated on the Dnieper River in the northern part of the country.
Kyiv is in north-central Ukraine.
North-central. Reporters on the ground describe heavy damage to the area. The investigation into both attacks is ongoing.
Turning to Italy, where investigators are treating the theft of four Renaissance paintings as a professional operation. The works were taken from a museum in Verona overnight.
No alarms were triggered during the theft. Museum officials are calling the paintings extraordinary and irreplaceable. Police are reviewing security footage and interviewing staff.
Verona is in the Veneto region, known for dry climate and high altitude storage conditions, which is why so many Renaissance works are preserved there.
Verona is at two hundred feet above sea level. It's known for its Roman amphitheater.
Two hundred feet. The lack of triggered alarms suggests the thieves had detailed knowledge of the museum's security systems. Interpol has been notified.
And in England, families who evacuated due to fires in Stourbridge are beginning to return home. Many are seeing the damage to their properties for the first time since the fires began last week.
Local authorities are assessing structural damage to dozens of homes and businesses. Temporary housing has been provided for those whose properties are not safe to enter.
Stourbridge is in the West Midlands, near Birmingham, historically known for glassmaking. The industry there goes back to the sixteen hundreds.
Stourbridge is in the West Midlands, near Birmingham.
Sixteen.
Relief teams are coordinating with local charities to provide essential supplies. The cause of the fires is still under investigation.
Coming up in a few minutes, Criminal Intent. A Wexler County man is facing charges after what deputies are calling the most unnecessary crime of the year.
He already owned the thing he stole.
That's next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, are we favoring camera two this hour. It feels like we're favoring camera two.
We're on camera two.
A Wisconsin man has been arrested for the third time in four months for stealing the same lawn ornament from the same yard in Green Bay.
Police say the suspect returned the ceramic garden gnome twice after previous arrests, then stole it again within seventy-two hours both times.
The owner told investigators she no longer wants the gnome back. Police say they are holding it as evidence, which means there is now a garden gnome in a Green Bay evidence locker.
Between two vehicles and a stolen lawnmower.
A Florida man is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he attempted to mail himself seventeen pounds of lobster tails in a box marked personal documents.
Customs agents became suspicious when the package began leaking ice water onto other mail at the Miami sorting facility.
The suspect allegedly told agents he believed personal documents were exempt from agricultural inspection, which would be correct if they were documents and not shellfish.
The lobster tails were confiscated and destroyed. The man has pleaded not guilty.
An Illinois woman was sentenced to ninety days for filing false insurance claims after reporting her car stolen six times in eighteen months.
Court documents show she collected over forty thousand dollars before investigators noticed she was reporting the same vehicle. She will serve her sentence on weekends.
In Oregon, police are searching for a man who allegedly stole a riding lawn mower and was last seen heading north on Highway Twenty-Six at approximately four miles per hour.
Police say they lost sight of the suspect after approximately eleven minutes when he turned onto a side road. The mower is valued at three thousand dollars.
Aerial coverage would have shown the pursuit stretched over approximately seven-tenths of a mile, according to the highway patrol's incident report.
We do not have aerial coverage.
But the report does.
And a California appeals court has upheld the conviction of a man who prosecutors say threw pennies at a clerk after she refused to count them as payment for a parking ticket.
The defense argued that legal tender is legal tender. The state argued that hurling it at someone is assault, and the court agreed.
The parking ticket was thirty-five dollars. The fine for assault was eighteen hundred.
Still ahead, a story we have been holding all night. It involves a horse, a fence, and a memory that lasted seven years.
That's Happy Animals, and that's next.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
Gordo, is camera two still being favored or have we corrected that.
We have not corrected that because it was never happening.
It has been three segments and nobody has addressed the framing.
A Virginia dog separated from its family during a camping trip has been found safe after walking forty-two miles over eleven days.
The retriever was wearing a GPS collar that stopped transmitting on day three. A hiker found her Tuesday morning at a trailhead parking lot fourteen miles from the original campsite.
Forty-two miles.
That is a very good dog.
She walked the long way around.
She got there.
A Tennessee sanctuary has taken in six alpacas whose owner could no longer care for them. The animals arrived Sunday and are already socializing with the resident herd.
The sanctuary now houses seventy-three animals including goats, sheep, and one emu.
One emu.
His name is Gerald.
Of course it is.
In Massachusetts, a harbor seal pup rescued in January has been released back into the ocean after nine months of rehabilitation. The pup weighed eighteen pounds when found and now weighs sixty-four.
And a Florida parrot who went missing three years ago has been found living in a park two miles from home, where it had joined a flock of wild parrots and learned their calls.
The owner recognized her by a distinctive mark on her beak. The parrot did not recognize the owner and had to be recaptured with seed.
She had a whole life, Chip.
She had seed at home.
Apparently the seed in the park was better.
Still ahead, we have SPORTS.
Fairmont High cross country opens its season Saturday at Brookside, and the girls team has a new runner who was not supposed to be eligible until next year.
That's next.
SPORTS
Coming up, the Krak 11 Scoreboard.
Good evening. Fairmont High cross country opens the season tomorrow at the Brookside Invitational, and the roster is young. Nine freshmen on varsity.
That's the largest freshman class they've had in seven years.
Which means the program is healthy. Young legs, fresh talent, the kind of foundation you build a dynasty on.
It means they didn't have enough upperclassmen.
Nationally, the Patriot Games continue in Washington. Two students from each state competing as part of the country's two hundred fiftieth anniversary celebrations.
Track and field, swimming, basketball. The kind of program that reminds the next generation what athletic excellence looks like when it's performed for something larger than yourself.
It's high school athletes running races.
For their country, Deb.
In borrowed tracksuits.
Softball. Brookside Auto remains county rec league champion after their eight to six victory over Pittman Realty two weeks ago.
Four runs in the fifth inning.
That's when champions perform. Late innings, pressure on, and they delivered. Pittman's team fought hard, fielded a deep roster including Dale Pittman's fourteen-year-old nephew at second base.
They needed bodies.
They needed depth, and they went to their bench. That's coaching.
The bench was one child.
And internationally, Tuvalu boxer Tarona Taafaki is guaranteed at least bronze at the Commonwealth Games in the women's featherweight division after her opponent withdrew before their quarterfinal bout.
It's the first medal in Commonwealth Games history for Tuvalu, and she did it without throwing a punch. Her semifinal is scheduled for Friday.
She advanced on a walkover.
She showed up. Half of competition is being there when your opponent isn't.
The other half is boxing.
Coming up, the next Krak 11 News, at the top of the hour.
Still ahead.
That's the Krak 11 Scoreboard.
Did the Patriot Games piece read as informed.
It read as a man describing a field day.
It's a national competition with state representation. That's the Olympics model.
The Olympics model is the Olympics.
Gordo, would you describe my delivery on the Patriot Games story as—
I would describe it as over.
I'm asking if the tone suggested someone who follows international youth athletics.
Nobody follows international youth athletics, Chip.
Somebody has to, or there wouldn't be a competition.
Thirty seconds.
I want the sports open tighter tomorrow. Camera two, closer on the desk, the Scoreboard graphic should fill more of the upper third.
The graphic is fine.
It could be fuller.
