KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Coming up this hour: The World Desk, where Hawaii prepares for its first direct hurricane strike in more than three decades. Criminal Intent, where a blindfolded Kentucky man just set a world record with a potato.
Happy Animals, where college freshmen are getting advice they did not ask for. And Sports, where the future of transportation has arrived in exactly three American cities.
The potato story is not a crime.
It's where we put the record attempts.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News: fully autonomous taxis are now picking up passengers without a human driver behind the wheel. We'll tell you which cities have them and how long the wait is everywhere else.
That's coming up in just a few minutes. Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
Welcome back.
The BBC is seeking to subpoena members of the Trump family as part of its ongoing lawsuit. The network's lawyers argue Trump's children and son-in-law have personal knowledge of his intentions during the January sixth speech outside the Capitol.
The lawsuit stems from coverage of the January sixth riots in London.
The riots were in Washington. The BBC broadcast from London.
Right. The subpoenas would compel testimony from Donald Trump Junior, Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. No date has been set for depositions.
To the Middle East. Lebanese authorities say eleven people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon today. Israel's military says it struck what it called Hezbollah terror infrastructure in response to earlier attacks on its soldiers.
The strikes hit three villages near the Syrian border.
The Israeli border.
Near the Israeli border. Lebanon's health ministry says the dead include two children. The United Nations is calling for de-escalation on both sides.
A health story out of the UK tonight. Cosmetic clinics are reporting a sharp increase in men seeking penis filler procedures despite significant medical risks. The BBC spoke to several doctors who say the procedure can result in permanent disfigurement.
The procedure promises ten to twenty percent more girth for six to nine months. It costs between two and four thousand pounds and is not reversible if complications occur.
Doctors say men are seeking the procedure after seeing it promoted on social media. One surgeon told the BBC he treats three to four patients a month for botched procedures done elsewhere.
The British Medical Association is calling for tighter regulation of cosmetic procedures. Currently anyone can perform them regardless of medical training.
Anyone.
That seems like a place to start.
An update on a story we brought you earlier. Indonesian officials now say rescue operations will continue through Sunday night despite fading chances of finding additional survivors. The death toll stands at forty-seven.
The region experiences about nine percent of the world's seismic activity, so response teams are well-trained for this kind of disaster.
Thirteen percent.
Thirteen percent of global earthquakes occur in Indonesia. The rapid assessment team has catalogued damage to over four hundred buildings, most in a twelve-block radius of the epicenter.
International aid organizations are on the ground. The Indonesian government has not requested additional foreign assistance at this time.
And in Hawaii, the National Guard has been activated and twelve shelters are open as Hurricane Lala approaches. Landfall is expected late Sunday night local time. That's early Monday morning here.
The storm could dump up to twenty-five inches of rain on Big Island. Forecasters say the last direct hurricane strike on Hawaii was nineteen ninety-two.
Thirty-four years is a long time between storms. People forget how to prepare.
They've had thirty-four years to prepare.
Governor's office says mandatory evacuations for coastal areas will be announced by six p.m. Hawaii time if the storm maintains its current track. Residents are being told to have three days of food and water ready.
Airlines have cancelled all Sunday flights into and out of Hilo and Kona. Travelers already on the island are being told to shelter in place.
Deb, you know the thing about storms like this. It's not just wind. It's what the wind picks up.
We have time.
For the weather brief.
We have time for the weather brief.
Coming up. A Virginia State University vigil is scheduled for tomorrow night, but the university still hasn't said if classes will resume Monday. Multiple suspects remain at large after five people were shot outside residence halls early this morning. We'll have the latest when Criminal Intent continues.
You're watching KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Coming up after the break, a local animal shelter needs your help. But first, the Krak 11 Blotter.
A Kentucky man has set a world record that authorities are not calling suspicious but perhaps should be. The crime: assembling a Mr. Potato Head toy while blindfolded in seven point nine two seconds.
Guinness World Records confirmed the time.
Seven seconds, Deb. That is faster than most people can find the nose.
The previous record was nine point four seconds.
UPI reports the attempt was successful on the first try, which I can only describe as the work of a person with intimate knowledge of potato-based anatomy.
In Essex, England, a woman and her accomplice have been sentenced to seventeen years in prison for drugging four men, two of whom died. Adina Mihai posed as a sex worker and administered sedatives to the victims. Her partner, Madalin Dumitru, arranged the meetings.
Prosecutors said the pair targeted the men to steal from them. Both defendants were convicted in June.
Seventeen years.
In Virginia, federal immigration agents are facing questions after a woman reported filming an ICE officer pointing a firearm at her during an encounter. BBC Verify says it examined the recording.
BBC reports the weapon was drawn. ICE has not commented on the incident.
The agency has also announced it will begin issuing shock gloves to field agents, a piece of equipment that has drawn criticism from civil rights organizations.
The gloves deliver an electric charge on contact and were previously used by some law enforcement agencies before being discontinued due to safety concerns.
Shock gloves. Which sounds like something a person of interest would use, not the person investigating them.
Alleged person of interest.
Always.
Coming up in just a few minutes on Happy Animals, a dog in Wexler County has learned to open the refrigerator, which its owner describes as both impressive and expensive.
The dog is a Labrador. The breed is known for food motivation.
Happy Animals is next.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Coming up: the Labrador who mastered kitchen appliances, and why one Texas family says they owe their lives to a goose named Goosey.
A Labrador retriever in Wexler County has learned to open the refrigerator. The dog's owner says she came home Tuesday to find every drawer emptied and the dog asleep on the kitchen floor.
The dog ate an entire rotisserie chicken, half a pound of deli turkey, and what the owner described as quote, most of a casserole.
The owner says she's installing a child lock on the refrigerator door.
Good boy found a skill.
That goose we told you about Wednesday night in Fort Bend County, Texas. The family that lost their barn has started a fundraiser to buy Goosey his own statue.
The fundraiser passed forty thousand dollars in two days. They are commissioning a bronze goose for the town square, life-size, honking.
The sculptor says it will take six months and the dedication ceremony is planned for next spring.
That is a goose that saved lives and he should be honored accordingly.
He should.
A woman in Brazil was bitten by a shark while swimming with influencers who were filming content for social media. She required sixteen stitches to her hand and was released from hospital Thursday.
Marine biologists say sharks do not want to be near humans and the close-up photography being promoted on social media is dangerous for both species.
Leave the sharks alone.
Still ahead: a championship on the line, a record within reach, and one relay that could make history. Sports is next.
Stay with us.
SPORTS
Sports now.
Amy Hunt runs for history tomorrow. The British sprinter has already won three golds at the European Championships in Rome. The four-by-one-hundred relay final Sunday is her shot at four. No athlete has ever done that.
In a single European Championship.
That's what I said.
You said no athlete has ever done that. Michael Gross won five in nineteen-eighty-five. Swimming.
Hunt won the hundred meters, the two hundred meters, and anchored the four-by-four. She ran the two hundred in twenty-two-point-one-eight. Dina Asher-Smith took silver in the two hundred and gold in the four-by-four, making her the most decorated British female sprinter in European Championship history.
The relay final is Sunday at two-fifteen Eastern.
Here's something. A Venezuelan soccer player was detained by ICE last month. Kevin Homero Calderón. Professional midfielder. He's been sitting in detention for three weeks because his asylum hearing isn't scheduled until twenty-twenty-eight.
Twenty-twenty-eight is the earliest available slot. Immigration courts are backlogged three-point-six million cases.
He played for a team in Nevada. Semi-pro league. Was training with them when agents picked him up outside the facility.
His attorney says he has no criminal record and applied for asylum when he entered the country in twenty-twenty-three.
So he sits for two years.
Or longer. The backlog has doubled in eighteen months.
Chelsea and Fulham played to a one-one draw Saturday in West London. Morgan Rogers scored on his debut for Chelsea twelve minutes in. Eighteen million pounds from Middlesbrough and he delivers immediately. That's what you want.
Fulham equalized in the seventy-third minute. Raúl Jiménez from the spot.
New manager Xabi Alonso gets his first point. Not his first win, but you take what the game gives you. Enzo Fernández was booed by his own supporters when he came on in the sixty-eighth minute.
Seventy-first minute.
I'm giving context.
You're giving the wrong minute.
Chelsea is ninth in the table after four matches. One win, two draws, one loss. That's not where you spend eighteen million to be.
It's August.
And they're ninth.
College football. Oregon opened the season with a forty-two to ten win over Idaho in Eugene. Dillon Gabriel threw for three touchdowns in his debut as a Duck. Wisconsin beat Western Michigan thirty-eight to nothing in Madison.
Penn State beat West Virginia thirty-four to twelve in Morgantown. Drew Allar threw for two-eighty-five yards and three scores.
Georgia Tech upset Florida State twenty-four to twenty-one in Dublin. That's in Ireland. They flew everyone to Ireland for a season opener and Florida State lost to an unranked team.
Georgia Tech was ranked twenty-third going into the game.
Still an upset.
Still not unranked.
Coming up on the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. A story out of Wexler County that will make you check your own fridge. One local dog has learned a trick that cost his owner an entire dinner and most of a second one.
The dog can open the refrigerator.
I was building to that.
You were taking too long.
That's next, at the top of the hour, right here on KRAK 11 News.
