KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Fairmont. This is KRAK 11 News. Eleven dead in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon. A Tyrannosaurus rex sells for fifty million dollars. And a gun buyback launches in Australia after a beach attack.
Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News: The World Desk, where eleven people are dead in southern Lebanon. Criminal Intent, where a dinosaur just sold for more money than this station is worth. Happy Animals, where six Australian states are buying back guns. And Sports, where a boxer won a medal without throwing a punch.
New South Wales is one state.
I was being thorough.
You were being inaccurate.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, The World Desk takes you to Lebanon, where Israeli forces say they struck Hezbollah infrastructure after attacks on their soldiers. Eleven dead. We'll have the latest in a few minutes.
Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
The World Desk.
Rescuers in Indonesia are searching for survivors after a powerful earthquake destroyed hundreds of buildings and killed at least forty-seven people.
Officials say a rapid assessment is under way. The quake struck the island chain early Saturday morning local time.
Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire, the Pacific volcanic zone where most of the world's earthquakes occur.
The Ring of Fire circles the Pacific. Indonesia is on the southern arc.
That's what I said.
You said most of the world's earthquakes. Ninety percent of them.
I was rounding.
To Virginia. Police are searching for multiple suspects after five people were shot outside residence halls at Virginia State University early this morning.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at one twenty-eight a.m. local time. All five victims were transported to area hospitals.
Police have not released condition reports or identified any suspects. The university is in Petersburg, about twenty-five miles south of Richmond.
We will update this as information becomes available.
To the Middle East. Israeli forces struck what the military described as Hezbollah terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon today, killing eleven people.
The Israeli Defense Forces say the strikes were in response to earlier action against its soldiers near the border.
Lebanon's been a flashpoint since the Hezbollah incursion last month.
Hezbollah is based in Lebanon. The incursion was from Gaza.
Same region.
Different countries.
And to sports. Great Britain won two relay golds at the European Athletics Championships today.
Amy Hunt claimed her third gold medal in her bid for a historic quadruple, and Dina Asher-Smith made history with the women's four-by-one-hundred team.
Asher-Smith is now the most decorated British athlete in European Championship history.
Hunt still has one event left. The four-by-four-hundred finals are tomorrow.
And Liechtenstein. The principality has amended its constitution to allow women to inherit the throne.
The declaration was made today on the national day of the alpine country, which has a population of forty-four thousand.
That's smaller than Fairmont.
Fairmont is sixty-one thousand.
Metropolitan area.
Seventy-eight thousand.
Deb. The thing about knowing the world is knowing where you fit in it. Which is something we used to—
We're at time.
We have ninety seconds.
We're at time.
Coming up. A Wexler County woman is charged with three felonies after police say she used her brother's name on a traffic stop and it gets worse from there.
Criminal Intent is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Coming up, a fifty million dollar crime scene. But first.
A Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known as Gus has become the most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold at auction. Fifty million dollars. An unidentified buyer walked out with sixty-seven million years of vertebrate history.
Fifty million two hundred thousand.
The previous record was forty-four million, also a T-rex, sold in twenty-twenty. That specimen was incomplete. Gus is what authorities are calling an intact person of interest.
Authorities are paleontologists and they did not call it that.
The buyer remains anonymous. Could be anywhere by now.
It weighs nine thousand pounds and requires climate controlled transport. Police have not named the buyer because no crime occurred.
Meanwhile, a San Francisco man doing landscaping work unearthed a hundred-fifty-pound stone sculpture buried in his yard. Authorities believe it may be connected to Ralph Stackpole, a prominent local artist from the nineteen-thirties.
Art historians believe it may be connected. The homeowner found it four feet down while installing drainage.
Stackpole worked on major public art projects including Coit Tower. No word yet on whether the sculpture was intentionally buried or simply lost to time. The piece is being authenticated.
If authenticated, value is estimated between twenty and sixty thousand dollars. The homeowner has not decided whether to keep it or sell it.
Can't decide if it stays or goes. Deb?
Moving on.
The Trump administration has issued a memorandum proposing to allow private companies to hack foreign cybercriminals. The White House says it would give businesses the ability to, quote, sabotage or spy on certain foreign actors.
The proposal is thin on details. No timeline for implementation. Cybersecurity experts have raised concerns about escalation and attribution.
I like it. Take the fight to them. You know what they say, the best defense is a—
International law violation.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, Happy Animals. A golden retriever in Iowa has done something most of us would never attempt. Six times. In a storm drain. We'll explain.

HAPPY ANIMALS
And now the Good News Desk.
A bottlenose dolphin separated from its pod off the coast of North Carolina has been successfully reunited after a four-day search and rescue operation.
Marine biologists tracked the dolphin using drone footage and coordinated with local fishing vessels to guide it back to deeper water where the pod was located.
The dolphin was a juvenile female, approximately three years old, and appeared healthy throughout the separation.
Four days alone in the ocean and she just... kept going.
The reunion was confirmed by visual tracking at eleven-fifteen yesterday morning.
Closer to home, a Labrador retriever in Wexler County led firefighters to a injured hiker on the Ridgeline Trail after the dog showed up alone at the trailhead parking lot.
The hiker had fallen approximately thirty feet down an embankment and sustained a leg fracture. The dog, a five-year-old named Scout, returned to the lot and refused to leave.
Firefighters followed Scout back to the location. The hiker was airlifted to Fairmont General and is in stable condition.
The dog knew. Didn't panic. Just went and got help.
The dog is very good.
And in England, a sanctuary in Hampshire released six barn owls back into the wild after rehabilitation from injuries sustained in vehicle collisions.
That brings the total to nine this week. Three were released earlier in the segment you just mentioned.
I'm counting all of them.
Still ahead, a match that stopped an entire country, a goalkeeper who made history, and the phrase nobody expected to hear at a championship. Sports, in a few minutes.
Stay with us.
SPORTS
Sports.
We start with Manchester United. Marcus Rashford made his return to Red Devils action in Poland today after sitting out the last three friendlies. United lost four-two to AC Milan in what manager Ruben Carrick is calling issues that need addressing before the season opener.
Four losses in their last six friendlies. Season starts in nine days.
Pre-season is about working out the kinks.
They have nine days to find them.
A boxer from the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu has won her country's first-ever Commonwealth Games medal. Tarona Taafaki took bronze in the women's flyweight division without winning a single fight.
She advanced on two walkovers and lost her semifinal. Bronze is awarded to both losing semifinalists in Olympic-style boxing.
Still counts.
It does. Tuvalu's population is eleven thousand. They have never medaled in any international competition.
You take the win however it comes. Champions show up, they stay ready, and when the moment arrives they are there to seize it.
She lost.
Moving on. The Patriot Games continue in Washington with medal ceremonies scheduled for Sunday night on the National Mall. Two hundred athletes representing all fifty states are competing in track, swimming, basketball, and what organizers are calling uniquely American challenges.
No results have been released yet. The full competition runs through the weekend.
It is part of the two-hundred-fiftieth anniversary celebration. Bringing young athletes together from every corner of the country to compete on behalf of their home states.
We don't have scores.
I am providing context.
Sunday.
In international soccer news, a Venezuelan professional player detained by ICE last October has been released after nine months. Homero Calderón was picked up outside his home in Miami and has been in federal custody while his immigration case sat in the backlog.
The immigration court system currently has a backlog of three point seven million cases. Average wait time is four years.
Calderón played professionally in Venezuela's top division before coming to the U.S. in twenty-twenty-two. His case has now been dismissed and he is with family in South Florida.
He spent nine months in detention waiting for a hearing that lasted eleven minutes.
And finally tonight, a story out of Bolivia that is getting attention in international soccer circles. A referee working a second-division match last weekend stopped play in the seventy-third minute, walked off the field, and has not been seen since.
The Bolivian Football Federation says referee Gustavo Méndez left the stadium without filing a match report, without speaking to either team, and without returning his equipment.
Players from both sides say he blew the whistle mid-play, said something nobody could hear, and walked straight to the parking lot. The match was tied one-one. They brought in a replacement official and finished it. Final score two-one.
The federation has opened an investigation and suspended Méndez pending his return. He has not responded to calls.
You ever think about just walking away in the middle of something?
Every day.
Still ahead on the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. A Fairmont business owner says the city owes him eleven thousand dollars in parking fines that were never his to begin with. The receipts say otherwise.
We will have that story and the rest of the day's news coming up.
For Deb Sarkissian, I'm Chip Marlowe. We'll see you at the top of the hour.
