KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Fairmont. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. Eleven people are dead after Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon. Authorities say the military targeted what it calls Hezbollah infrastructure.
Luigi Mangione has admitted guilt in federal court, reading a statement explaining why he targeted the UnitedHealthcare CEO. That's Criminal Intent.
A Florida man wins three hundred fifty-eight thousand dollars in Michigan and says he's moving there permanently. That is Happy Animals.
It's a lottery story.
It ran there last hour.
And in Sports, a boxer from Tuvalu wins her country's first Commonwealth Games medal without winning a single fight. The World Desk is still ahead with the latest from Lebanon.
THE WORLD DESK
We turn now to news from around the world.
A powerful earthquake has killed at least forty-seven people in eastern Indonesia. The magnitude seven-point-seven quake struck the island of Flores early this morning local time.
Search and rescue teams are working through the night in Flores, which is in the southern Pacific region.
Eastern Indonesia.
That's what I said, the southern Pacific islands.
Flores is part of the eastern Indonesian archipelago, between the Java Sea and the Timor Sea. The death toll is expected to rise as crews reach more remote areas.
Survivors are being pulled from collapsed buildings. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which I believe runs through the southern Pacific.
The Ring of Fire is a forty-thousand-kilometer zone around the Pacific Ocean. It does not run through anything. It encircles the entire Pacific basin.
So it does include the southern region.
And the northern, eastern, and western regions. In the Middle East, eleven people have been killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon.
Israel's military says it struck what it describes as Hezbollah terror infrastructure in response to earlier action against its soldiers.
No further details on casualties have been released. Lebanon's health ministry is coordinating emergency response in the affected areas.
That region has been tense for decades, going back to the nineteen-eighties when Lebanon was part of the broader Arab Spring movement.
The Arab Spring was twenty-eleven. Lebanon's civil war was nineteen-seventy-five to nineteen-ninety.
Both were periods of significant regional upheaval.
Thirty-six years apart.
In Virginia, five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University early this morning. One victim remains in critical condition.
The university says multiple suspects were involved. The incident occurred just after two a.m. on campus grounds. No arrests have been announced.
Virginia State is located in Petersburg, which is about twenty-five miles south of Richmond, the state capital.
Twenty-three miles south.
I said about twenty-five.
You did.
In Thailand, a father and his two young sons spent sixteen hours adrift at sea after their jet ski capsized off the coast of Koh Samui.
The engine failed, and the family floated through the night before being rescued by a passing fishing vessel. All three are reported in stable condition.
Koh Samui is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations in the Gulf of Siam.
The Gulf of Thailand.
It has been called both names historically.
It has been called the Gulf of Thailand since nineteen-forty-nine.
So historically.
Seventy-six years.
Still ahead, a Fairmont man is facing charges after police say he tried to sell items that were never his to begin with. That story is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT, in two minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Two drivers in California have filed a class action lawsuit against Mercedes-Benz claiming the AMG logo on their driver's seat gave them burn injuries.
The logo is metal. It heats up in the sun.
These are luxury vehicles. The seats are climate-controlled, the mirrors adjust by themselves, the car probably parks itself, and nobody thought to insulate the branding.
The lawsuit alleges negligent design.
You pay eighty thousand dollars for a car and the badge leaves a mark. That is not the kind of impression Mercedes was going for.
A South Yorkshire farmer has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of thirty-five years after concealing his lodger's body in a barrel filled with concrete for more than five years.
Christopher Wright, seventy-three, was convicted in July in Sheffield Crown Court. Prosecutors said he shot Richard Dyson and dismembered the remains.
The body was discovered on Wright's farm property during an unrelated investigation.
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He read a statement aloud to the court.
His state murder trial is currently scheduled to begin September eighth. Legal analysts say the federal guilty plea could complicate that prosecution under double jeopardy protections.
Could. Prosecutors say the charges are distinct.
Prosecutors allege the charges are distinct.
In the UK, a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after police responding to reports of a burglary found the body of a seventeen-year-old boy.
Police have not released further details. The investigation is ongoing.
Back to the Mercedes case for a moment. If you are going to put your logo on something people sit on for extended periods in direct sunlight, maybe run a test.
The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages.
I would specify them. Second-degree logo, that is at least medical bills and a new seat cover.
Coming up, we have animals that will not burn you. That is Happy Animals, and it is next.
Stay with us.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Coming up: a veterinary hospital offering something a lot of people need, and three baby goats who don't know how lucky they are.
A veterinary hospital in Boulder, Colorado has launched a free grief counseling program for families who have lost a pet. They've served over two hundred families since January.
The hospital says the loss of a pet can be as significant as any other grief, and a lot of people don't have anyone who will say that out loud.
That's — that's exactly right. People act like it shouldn't matter as much and it does. It matters.
The program includes individual sessions and group support. No referral needed.
An animal sanctuary in Oregon is welcoming three baby goats born last week to Mabel, a mother goat rescued from a hoarding situation in April.
The sanctuary says all three kids are healthy and Mabel is doing fine. They're asking the public to help name them.
Voting closes Saturday. The names are posted on the sanctuary's website.
And Roma, a fourteen-pound hairless mix from Santa Rosa, California, has been crowned the two thousand twenty-six World's Ugliest Dog.
The contest has been running annually in Santa Rosa for decades. Roma takes home fifteen hundred dollars and a fire hydrant trophy.
That dog has no idea it won by being ugly. It just knows it won.
Coming up: we'll have SPORTS in a few minutes, including a boxer from Tuvalu who won a medal without winning a fight. We'll explain that.
Stay with us.
SPORTS
Time now for Sports.
We begin with what may be the strangest medal ceremony in Commonwealth Games history. A boxer from the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu has won her country's first-ever Commonwealth Games medal without winning a single fight.
Tarona Taafaki advanced to the bronze medal position after her opponent withdrew due to injury. She accepted the medal on behalf of Tuvalu, population twelve thousand.
Sometimes you win by showing up.
She showed up for three scheduled bouts. Two opponents withdrew.
Still counts.
It does.
Closer to home, immigration enforcement officials detained a Venezuelan professional soccer player outside his home in Texas last month, and his case is now highlighting the massive backlog in the U.S. immigration court system.
Homero Calderón, who played professionally in Venezuela's first division, has been in ICE custody for six weeks. His hearing is scheduled for January twenty-twenty-eight.
Two years from now.
The current backlog in immigration courts is approximately three point seven million cases.
Moving to international competition, Ireland's Kate O'Connor is in pole position for heptathlon gold at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with just the eight hundred meters remaining.
O'Connor leads the field heading into the final event. Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the defending champion, is out of medal contention after withdrawing from the long jump.
The eight hundred is where you find out what you're made of. Two laps, all guts, no strategy.
The eight hundred meter is widely considered the most strategic middle distance event.
Positioning matters.
Yes.
And in what I'm calling the Marlowe Scoreboard Spotlight, we want to take a moment to recognize Virginia State University's track and field program, which just received a major donation to upgrade their facilities.
We have not confirmed that story.
It's on their website.
The Marlowe Scoreboard Spotlight is not a segment.
It could be.
Virginia State is twenty-three miles south of Richmond and their track program has received alumni funding for resurfacing and timing equipment. The university announced it last Tuesday.
Thank you, Deb. That facility has produced twelve Division Two All-Americans since two thousand and ten.
Thirteen.
Thirteen. And speaking of programs that produce results, the two of us have been bringing you the most accurate sports coverage in Wexler County for a decade.
Coming up on the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour, a story about ownership. A local couple is fighting over a boat neither one has used in six years, and the judge presiding over the case has questions about why it matters so much.
Sometimes it's not about the boat.
It's a nineteen-ninety-six Bayliner. Appraised value four thousand dollars.
Still.
That's the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. I'm Deb Sarkissian.
And I'm Chip Marlowe. Thanks for watching the Scoreboard.
